Indices end volatile session with marginal gains

<p style="text-align: justify;">After two days of fall, Indian equity benchmarks ended extremely volatile session with marginal gains on Friday, helped by buying in Metal, Realty and Telecom stocks amid a firm trend in global markets. Frontline indices made an optimistic start and stayed in green for most part of the day, as traders took encouragement with industry body CII stating that India's economy is expected to grow in the range of 6.5-6.7 per cent in the current financial year supported by strong domestic drivers and robust capex momentum of the government. However, markets quickly pared all the gains as traders turned cautious with provisional data from the National Stock Exchange showing that foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 71.07 crore on June 1, 2023. Some concern also came with global rating agency Fitch's report stating that a rise in risk appetite among Indian banks highlights the importance of assessing individual banks' ability to withstand expected and unexpected balance-sheet stress as part of the analysis of their intrinsic creditworthiness</p><p style="text-align: justify;">However, markets regained buying momentum in afternoon deals, as some optimism remained among traders with the finance ministry's statement that GST collection in May rose 12 per cent to Rs 1.57 lakh crore as compared to the GST revenues in the same month last year. Buying further crept in as a foreign brokerage has revised upwards its India growth forecast by 70 bps to 6.2 per cent for the current fiscal, citing a better-than-estimated global growth outlook, lower global crude oil prices and robust services exports. Markets trimmed some gains in final minutes of trade but managed to end higher taking support from G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant's statement that India's G20 Presidency will remain focused on economic development issues and endeavour to bring all the member countries, including Russia and China, on board amid the ongoing geo-political uncertainties. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">On the global front, Asian markets settled mostly higher on Friday, while European markets were trading higher after the U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan bill to raise the debt ceiling into 2025 and cut the deficit, the final hurdle for the U.S. to avoid default on its debt. Hopes of an economic recovery in China and hopes of a pause in the U.S. central bank's tightening policy also boosted investors' appetite for riskier assets. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Finally, the BSE Sensex rose 118.57 points or 0.19% to 62,547.11 and the CNX Nifty was up by 46.35 points or 0.25% to 18,534.10. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">The BSE Sensex touched high and low of 62,719.84 and 62,379.86, respectively. There were 20 stocks advancing against 10 stocks declining on the index.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The broader indices ended in green; the BSE Mid cap index rose 0.60%, while Small cap index was up by 0.57%.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Metal up by 1.71%, Realty up by 1.33%, Telecom up by 1.06%, Auto up by 0.98% and Industrials up by 0.85%, while Oil & Gas down by 0.71%, Energy down by 0.54%, TECK down by 0.40%, IT down by 0.32% and Power down by 0.05% were the top losing indices on BSE.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The top gainers on the Sensex were Tata Steel up by 1.93%, Maruti Suzuki up by 1.73%, Mahindra & Mahindra up by 1.71%, Sun Pharma up by 1.20% and Larsen & Toubro up by 1.19%. On the flip side, Infosys down by 1.58%, Wipro down by 0.60%, TCS down by 0.46%, HCL Technologies down by 0.38% and Reliance Industries down by 0.29% were the top losers.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Meanwhile, the finance ministry has said Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection rose 12 per cent to Rs 1.57 lakh crore in May 2023. Goods and Services Tax collection in May last year was about Rs 1.41 lakh crore. Last month, GST collection was at a record high of Rs 1.87 lakh crore.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The gross Good & Services Tax revenue collected in the month of May, 2023 is Rs 1,57,090 crore of which Central GST is Rs 28,411 crore, State GST is Rs 35,828 crore, Integrated GST is Rs 81,363 crore (including Rs 41,772 crore collected on import of goods) and cess is Rs 11,489 crore (including Rs 1,057 crore collected on import of goods).</p><p style="text-align: justify;">During the month, revenue from import of goods was 12 per cent higher and the revenues from domestic transactions (including import of services) are 11 per cent higher than the revenues from these sources during the same month last year.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The CNX Nifty traded in a range of 18,573.70 and 18,478.40. There were 32 stocks advancing against 18 stocks declining on the index.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The top gainers on Nifty were Hindalco up by 3.43%, Hero MotoCorp up by 3.09%, Apollo Hospital up by 3.03%, Tata Steel up by 1.98% and Maruti Suzuki up by 1.84%. On the flip side, Adani Enterprises down by 2.09%, BPCL down by 1.30%, HDFC Life Insurance down by 1.05%, TCS down by 0.53% and Wipro down by 0.44% were the top losers.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">European markets were trading higher; UK's FTSE 100 increased 68.5 points or 0.91% to 7,558.77, France's CAC rose 93.06 points or 1.3% to 7,230.49 and Germany's DAX gained 190.13 points or 1.2% to 16,043.79.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Asian markets settled mostly higher on Friday tracking Wall Street gains overnight after the US Senate passed a bill that suspended the government's borrowing limit to avert a default, while receding bets for a US interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve this month also supported market sentiments. Chinese shares gained on optimism that Chinese policymakers will soon deliver the much-needed stimulus to boost economic growth. <p style="text-align: justify;">In volatile trading session, Indian markets concluded last trading day of week in green territory on the hopes that the Federal Reserve might stand still on interest rates in its next meeting. In entire trading session, markets only once hit red terrain. Positive macroeconomic data i.e. strong Q4 GDP and Manufacturing PMI continue to provide some support to the markets. Moreover, market-participants would be eyeing the data of S&P Global Services PMI and S&P Global Composite PMI, which is scheduled to be release on June 05. However, in last leg of trade, indices witnessed some profit booking, as traders sold off their riskier assets at higher levels. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Markets started day's trade with decent gains tracking broadly firm cues from global counterparts. Besides, the finance ministry said Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection rose 12 per cent to Rs 1.57 lakh crore in May 2023. Goods and Services Tax collection in May last year was about Rs 1.41 lakh crore. Last month, GST collection was at a record high of Rs 1.87 lakh crore. Soon, markets come off from early gains to trade flat as traders opted to book profit. As trade progressed, indices managed to gain traction and remained higher in afternoon session as traders got some support with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal's statement that huge opportunities for people and businesses will be opened up when the country's goods and services exports touch $2 trillion by 2030. In the last two years, he said the country's exports jumped from $500 billion to $767 billion in 2022-23. In fag end of trade, markets trimmed some of their gains but Sensex and Nifty managed to end above their crucial 62,500 and 18,500 levels respectively.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">On the global front, European markets were trading higher after U.S. lawmakers passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling and cap government spending for two years, days before the default deadline. Asian markets ended in green ahead of a US jobs update after Federal Reserve officials reignited hopes another interest rate hike might be postponed. Back home, domestic rating agency Crisil in its latest report has said that Non-Bank Finance Companies-Microfinance Institutions' (NBFC-MFI) Assets Under Management (AUM) are expected to grow by up to 30 per cent in the current financial year (FY24).</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The BSE Sensex ended at 62,547.11, up by 118.57 points or 0.19% after trading in a range of 62,379.86 and 62,719.84. There were 19 stocks advancing against 11 stocks declining on the index. On the flip side, Infosys down by 1.58%, Wipro down by 0.60%, TCS down by 0.46%, HCL Tech down by 0.46% and Reliance Industries down by 0.29% were the top losers. (Provisional)</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Meanwhile, expressing optimism over the India's economic growth, newly elected President of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) R Dinesh has said that with support of strong domestic drivers and robust capex momentum of the government, the country's economy is likely to grow in the range of 6.5-6.7 per cent in the current financial year 2023-24 (FY24). Besides, India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 6.1 per cent in the March quarter of 2022-23, pushing the annual growth rate to 7.2 per cent. The growth has propelled the country's economy to $3.3 trillion, setting the stage for achieving the $5 trillion target in the next few years. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">He said India's GDP growth is expected to leapfrog to 7.8 per cent in the next decade (FY22-31) from 6.6 per cent previously recorded. He also said ‘the government's structural reform agenda has enabled the country to become the highest growing economy in the current scenario, and we believe this can be sustained going forward'. He further said ‘This year is very important in view of India assuming the G20 Presidency. The entire world is looking at India. In the last year, there has been a significant focus on India and the opportunities that arise from this are important for us'.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">CII President also expects the consumer price index (CPI) based retail inflation to fall within RBI's target range in 2023-24. He stressed that given the fast moderation in inflation, the RBI should continue with a pause in the short-term lending rate (repo rate) and also change its stance to neutral. The retail inflation declined to an 18-month low of 4.7 per cent in April and the data for May is scheduled to be released later this month. CII also suggested a host of reforms which the government should undertake to boost India's growth potential.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The CNX Nifty ended at 18,534.10, up by 46.35 points or 0.25% after trading in a range of 18,478.40 and 18,573.70. There were 35 stocks advancing against 15 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)</p><p style="text-align: justify;">European markets were trading higher, UK's FTSE 100 increased 65.55 points or 0.87% to 7,555.82, France's CAC rose 80.07 points or 1.11% to 7,217.50 and Germany's DAX was up by 157.56 points or 0.98% to 16,011.22.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Asian markets settled mostly higher on Friday tracking Wall Street gains overnight after the US Senate passed a bill that suspended the government's borrowing limit to avert a default, while receding bets for a US interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve this month also supported market sentiments. Chinese shares gained on optimism that Chinese policymakers will soon deliver the much-needed stimulus to boost economic growth.
